Spectrum Holidays, a Northumberland-based charity founded by Sophia and Malcolm Ainsworth, provides sensory-equipped caravans and holiday accommodations for families with neurodivergent children, enabling them to enjoy stress-free holidays and create lasting memories. The charity operates two caravans at Haggerston Castle in Berwick and partners with other holiday homes across the UK.
Origins of the Charity
Sophia and Malcolm Ainsworth, from Northumberland, both work full-time—Sophia at a local school and Malcolm as a driving instructor for neurodivergent young adults. They also run Spectrum Holidays, a charity that helps families find holiday accommodations fitted with sensory equipment and visual resources. The journey began after their son Luca, now 15, was born. Holidays were a nightmare for their family, leading them to stop trying altogether. Sophia said: "Holidays were just a nightmare for all of us. So stressful for everyone involved."
When Luca was older, they gave holidays another go, packing sensory toys and preparing him weeks in advance for a trip to Blackpool. While the first stay lasted only a day and most of the night, Luca progressively improved, and the family returned twice a year for several years. However, packing all the comforts and sensory toys was a massive job, so they bought a caravan to leave the equipment there permanently.
From Business to Charity
After joining a local support group, the couple learned that many other families faced similar struggles. They began letting families they knew stay at their caravan. The need was instant, so they bought another caravan and created Spectrum Holidays as a rental business. Over a year and a half, they worked on the business, but in 2019, they thought: "How can we help those who can’t access caravans?" The answer was to turn the business into a charity. Despite the hard work, they have never looked back.
The charity has won several awards, including the Autism Friendly Award from the National Autistic Society, the Most Inclusive Holiday Company 2023, and Tourism Business of the Year. These awards reflect the couple's dedication to providing stress-free holidays and irreplaceable memories.
Personalised Support and Equipment
Spectrum Holidays provides practical equipment such as blackout curtains, stairgates, bed guards, fidget toys, light projectors, easy hold mirrors, sensory light toys, fibre optic plumes, and a range of sensory tactile toys. The most important part is preparing families and children for their time away. Sophia and Malcolm have extensive talks weeks before the holiday, providing personalised information about destinations, what to bring, and facts about the child and family. This includes calendars and countdowns illustrated with pictures of the children, their families, and important items like a favourite blanket or theme such as dinosaurs.
The couple also prepares an informed pack on what families can expect to do, not just in the home but in the surrounding area. They personally visit the holiday homes they work with, often bringing Luca along. Sophia said: "It’s really important Luca comes, as they don’t have the experience, so they understand what we’re trying to do." However, they rely on their board of trustees, many of whom have neurodivergent children or are neurodivergent themselves, to ensure diverse perspectives.
Impact and Community
The charity's two caravans at Haggerston Castle are updated regularly, with turnover every Monday and Friday. The couple drives to Berwick to ensure sensory toys are available and add personal touches like changing bedding to children's favourite characters. Upgrades include safe space beds to ease nights away from home. The subsidised and free holidays are a lifeline for many families, enabling them to make memories together rather than splitting up. One family said: "Thank you so much for making our stay here at the caravan amazing. Thanks for being on call whenever we needed you. The kids loved the bedroom and toys, we now need to invest in a spinning chair and an egg chair. Keep up the amazing."
Another family commented: "Thank you all for our wonderful holiday. We have all had the best time and made lots of lovely memories. We have done lots of activities that have all been fantastic. The caravan has been so nice to stay in and the sensory toys and wall are a fantastic addition. The kids have already asked when we will be coming back. You are all truly amazing people." The caravans are located in a quieter part of the holiday park, allowing children to make friends and parents to expand their community.
The caravans typically operate at 98% occupancy most of the year, highlighting the clear need. The couple hopes for more support to expand and update the caravans as costs rise. Spectrum Holidays will host a fundraising Christmas Ball on November 28th at the Crowne Plaza, with a theme inspired by Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas. Those interested can contact Sophia and Malcolm through the Spectrum Holidays website.
