Soft Fluffy Towels with Vinegar and Salt Laundry Trick

Why Fabric Softener Ruins Towels

Stepping out of the shower to a rough, scratchy towel is a common frustration. Many people reach for fabric softener to fix the problem, but according to Faz Salloo, a bathroom specialist and owner of Bathroom Fort, this actually makes things worse. He explains that liquid fabric softener is oil-based and leaves a slick coating on towel fibres, reducing absorbency over time. The waxy build-up traps detergent and moisture, leading to stiffness and musty odours even after washing.

The Simple Two-Ingredient Solution

To restore towels to their former glory, you need just two budget-friendly kitchen staples: white vinegar and ordinary table salt. Faz Salloo says the acetic acid in white vinegar neutralises detergent and fabric conditioner residue, breaking down build-up and eliminating odours. Salt works on the fibres themselves, loosening compressed threads and removing mineral deposits from hard water, which helps the pile soften and rise.

Approximately 60% of UK households are supplied with hard water, making mineral build-up a widespread issue. Some worry that vinegar will leave a smell, but Faz assures that the vinegar scent disappears completely as towels dry, leaving a fresh, clean result. He calls it one of the cheapest laundry fixes and far gentler on fabric than commercial products.
