Stirling charity launches summer holiday food campaign

Start Up Stirling has launched its Spin it for Summer campaign, running from June 9 to June 30, to address the increased demand for crisis food support during the school summer holidays. The six-week break, while exciting for some, presents major challenges for many families across the Stirling region.

Impact of school holiday on families

The summer hiatus means breakfast clubs and school lunches are unavailable, placing additional pressure on household budgets. According to the Scottish Government Child Poverty Map 2024, the average child poverty rate in Stirling Council area is 20.4 per cent, with some areas nearly double that figure. Unpredictable events such as unexpected bills, job loss, late benefits, or rising rents and mortgage rates can push families into needing crisis food services.

How the community can help

The charity is urging residents to donate specific items: cereal bars, diluting juice, jams and spreads, hot dogs, snacks, and boxes of cereal. Financial contributions are also welcome to purchase fresh milk, cheese, fruit, and sandwich fillings, which cannot be accepted at donation stations. Start Up Stirling currently spends around £4,500 each month to buy fresh and frozen food, all of which must be fundraised.
