Gardeners Told to Water Plants at Two Key Times for Summer Success
Water Plants at Two Key Times for Summer Success

Gardeners looking to keep their plants thriving through the UK summer heat should focus on two specific watering times, according to gardening expert and TikTok creator Ish. In a recent video, he recommended watering either early in the morning between 7am and 9am or in the evening from 9pm onwards.

The advice comes as warm temperatures persist across the UK, even after the latest heatwave has subsided. While heat and sunshine can benefit plants, excessive exposure can lead to damaged, parched, or lifeless vegetation. Proper hydration is essential for survival, and the timing of watering is critical to prevent moisture from evaporating too quickly.

Why Timing Matters

Watering during cooler parts of the day reduces the likelihood of evaporation, ensuring the soil retains moisture. Ish explained: "Now, what I always tell people is water them in the mornings or evening, it's completely up to you." The same principle applies to garden lawns, which also benefit from early or late watering.

If a plant appears distressed during the hottest part of the day, Ish advised not to hesitate to give it a drink. He said: "But if you do see that one of your plants is struggling throughout the day, then you can water it. It's a common myth that it's going to burn them, it's not a giant magnifying glass with the water droplets, so don't worry. And if you want to give it a really good drink, apply it directly to the soil anyway, and as a result, they'll absolutely thrive."

Additional Tips for Hydration

Ish also suggested relocating potted plants to shaded spots to help the soil retain moisture. Placing light-coloured gravel across the soil surface can deflect sunlight and prevent overheating. Installing a shade screen throughout the garden is another effective method; these can be purchased from DIY stores, garden centres, or online retailers. A fitted white sheet serves as a budget-friendly alternative.

He added: "That way then, I can keep them well-watered in one space; group them close together so if it does get any sunshine, it's not getting directly to the soil which isn't drying out and, as a result, will survive throughout the heatwave. I can pop them back, and we're all good. And for those plants that are fixed into the ground, a good morning water, and they'll be fine."
