As the UK braces for a heatwave with temperatures approaching 40°C, many households are searching for effective ways to keep their homes cool without air conditioning. The British Red Cross has shared six free methods to help maintain a comfortable temperature, particularly important for families with children and pets.
Don't Leave Windows Open All Day
While it may seem intuitive to keep windows open, leaving them wide open once the outside temperature rises can actually make your home warmer. The British Red Cross advises opening windows first thing in the morning when the air is still cool, then closing them before the hottest part of the day begins. Once temperatures drop in the evening, reopen them to let fresh air circulate.
Block Out the Afternoon Sun
Direct sunlight pouring through windows can quickly heat up a room. Keeping blinds or curtains closed, especially in rooms that receive direct sunshine, can make a noticeable difference. Although the room may become darker, this trade-off is often worth it to keep the temperature down.
Give the Oven a Break
Cooking generates significant heat, making an already warm house feel even hotter. The British Red Cross recommends saving larger meals for later in the evening or opting for meals that require minimal cooking. Even switching off electrical items that are not in use can help reduce heat buildup.
Your Fan Might Be in the Wrong Place
A fan does not cool the room itself, but its placement can improve comfort. If the evening air is cooler outside, place the fan near an open window to pull that air indoors. Some people also put a bowl of ice or cold water in front of the fan for a brief cooling effect.
Stop Warm Air Moving Around the House
Leaving internal doors open allows heat to spread from room to room. Keeping doors closed during the day can help preserve cooler spaces, especially if one side of the house receives more sun than the other.
Cool Your Home Before You Go to Sleep
Once the sun goes down and the outside air cools, open windows and internal doors to create a through breeze. This helps bedrooms feel fresher and makes it easier to get a comfortable night's sleep.
