The recent heatwave in the UK saw temperatures approaching 40°C, with a red weather warning covering much of the country. After seven days of restless nights and sweltering conditions, the weather is expected to break this evening. To take advantage of the temperature drop and improve your chances of a good night's sleep, consider the following tips.
Use the 'Flushing' Technique to Cool Your Home
To reduce indoor temperatures, you need to flush out trapped hot air and draw cooler air inside. Wait until the outdoor temperature drops below the indoor temperature, then open windows on opposite sides of your home to create a cross breeze. This drives warm air out. If you have a loft hatch, open it as well—since hot air rises, it acts like a chimney, channeling warm air outside.
Position Fans Strategically for Maximum Effect
According to the Express, pointing a fan directly at yourself is not the most effective cooling method. Instead, place a fan a few feet back from an open window, facing outward, to draw hot air out of the room. Place a second fan on the shadier side of the house, in front of an open window but facing inward, to pull cooler air inside.
Reduce Heat Sources and Avoid Oven Use
Unplug appliances not in use, such as televisions, computers, and chargers, as they produce ambient heat even when switched off. During hot weather, avoid using the oven, as it heats up your home further. Opt for lighter, cooler meals or cook outdoors instead.
