"We're seeing vast expanses of dead and dry vegetation across rural areas that have just finished thawing from winter," he noted. The commander stressed that human activity remains the primary cause of wildfires, making prevention entirely possible through responsible behavior. "Most wildfires are human caused, which means they are also preventable," Lennox stated. "It is absolutely imperative that everyone acts responsibly while enjoying outdoor spaces – not just during periods of heightened risk like this one, but consistently throughout the entire year."

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service issued 14 separate wildfire warnings during 2025, with the final alert coming in October – well beyond what authorities consider the typical timeframe for elevated wildfire risk in Scotland. Last year also witnessed what experts believe was the largest wildfire ever recorded in United Kingdom history, burning across areas around Carrbridge and Dava Moor in the Highlands.
