London is set to swelter in temperatures around 36°C on Tuesday as a heatwave grips the capital. The Met Office warns the record UK high for June of 35.6°C could be broken, with conditions expected to intensify later in the week. Some schools and shops in London are closing as millions prepare for what could be an unprecedented heatwave for this time of year.
Thunderstorms Precede the Heatwave
The heatwave follows a night of spectacular thunderstorms over the capital, which caused flash floods and thousands of lightning strikes. The London Fire Brigade reported taking 400 calls and responding to two house fires believed to have been caused by lightning.
Drivers Urged to Postpone Journeys
The RAC has urged drivers to postpone non-essential travel, especially those without air conditioning, warning of extended wait times for breakdown assistance.
Temperatures Could Reach 39°C on Thursday
Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge stated: “The Met Office is flagging 39°C as a headline maximum temperature on Thursday, most likely for somewhere in London or the South East. Forecast temperature values are indicative and are subject to a slight range either side. It is possible we could see temperatures higher than 39°C if the final values are at the upper end of our narrow range.” He added that high humidity will make the intense heat even harder to endure.
Potential for Hottest June Day on Record
A maximum of 36°C is expected in London on Tuesday, which would break the current June record of 35.6°C. However, this record may be short-lived as temperatures on Wednesday are forecast to reach 37°C.
Wembley Stadium Relaxes Water Bottle Policy
Due to the heatwave, Wembley Stadium has relaxed its water bottle policy for upcoming events, including Harry Styles concerts. Empty 500ml metal or hard plastic bottles will now be allowed, whereas previously only clear plastic bottles without lids were permitted.
London's Cool Spaces Identified
The Greater London Authority’s “Cool Spaces” list provides a database of libraries, community centres, sports centres, and religious spaces offering shelter from the sun. Drinking water stations are also signposted to help Londoners stay hydrated.
Eurostar Cancels Services
Eurostar has cancelled two daily services between London St Pancras International and Paris Gare du Nord this week, citing “adverse weather conditions” due to the heatwave.
