A massive wildfire has erupted inside the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone in Ukraine, engulfing over 1,100 hectares of forest. The blaze is proving exceptionally difficult to contain as Ukrainian firefighters face the added hazard of landmines scattered throughout the area, according to emergency services.
Firefighting Efforts Hampered by Explosive Threats
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine reported that strong gusts of wind are causing the fire to spread rapidly, consuming new sections of the forest. The estimated affected area now exceeds 1,100 hectares. The situation is further complicated by dry weather conditions and the presence of explosive ordnance in certain zones, which significantly limits firefighting operations. In some forest sections, work has been temporarily suspended due to the threat of landmines.
Deployment of Emergency Resources
Units of the State Emergency Service, along with specialist equipment and personnel from other services, have been deployed to tackle the blaze. Rescue workers are operating in an enhanced mode, focusing on localising ignition sources and preventing the fire from spreading further. The emergency services stated, 'Efforts to extinguish a large-scale forest fire are ongoing in the Exclusion Zone.'
This is a developing story. More updates will follow as the situation evolves.
