Moorland Fire Near Greater Manchester Rages On

Fire crews remain in attendance this evening at an ongoing blaze tearing through large areas of moorland close to Greater Manchester. The major fire on Tintwistle Moor first broke out last night, with thick plumes of smoke billowing over the villages of Tintwistle, Hollingworth and Woolley Bridge.

Smoke Detected Miles Away

Posts on social media indicated smoke could be smelt from as far as Middleton, Rochdale and Oldham as the woodland continues to smoulder this evening. Emergency fire crews from Derbyshire and Greater Manchester remain on the scene.

Road Closures and Warnings

The Woodhead Pass is currently closed off in both directions, with other nearby road closures also in place. A large 'avoid the area' warning is in place, with nearby residents urged to keep windows and doors shut.

Extent of the Blaze

Dramatic drone footage shared by the fire service showed large swathes of woodland rapidly burning, with an area around 400 metres squared affected. The fire continues to burn, and crews are working to contain it.
