The Springs Fire broke out at approximately 11 a.m. on Friday and rapidly expanded to about 5.47 square miles (14.17 square kilometers) by the evening. Fire crews have begun containment efforts, but the cause of the blaze east of Moreno Valley in Riverside County remains under investigation. It is not yet clear how many households are affected by evacuation warnings or orders.
The fire is burning in a populated but not densely built-up unincorporated area of Riverside County, near the recreational zones close to Moreno Valley. This city has a population of roughly 200,000 and is located 10 miles (16 kilometers) southeast of Riverside and 64 miles (103 kilometers) east of Los Angeles.
Wind Conditions and Public Safety Concerns
High winds have significantly exacerbated the situation, with officials noting the challenging conditions. Maggie Cline De La Rosa, a public information officer for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection in Riverside County, stated, "It's windy out there." Alex Izaguirre, a spokesperson for Cal Fire Riverside County, added that the wind is "spreading the smoke," leading to concerned calls from residents in neighboring cities who can both see and smell the smoke.
The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for the San Bernardino and Riverside County valleys, effective through Saturday afternoon. Gusts of up to 50 mph (80 kph) are expected, which could result in downed tree limbs and potential power outages. The advisory warns, "Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result."
As the wildfire continues to pose a threat, authorities are closely monitoring the situation and urging residents to heed evacuation orders for their safety.
