Spain Warns Tourists: Three Rules Amid Heatwave

Spain's Ministerio del Interior has issued an urgent alert for everyone in the country, including holidaymakers, as a severe heatwave continues to grip the nation. The ministry urged people to follow three critical rules to prevent wildfires: do not discard cigarette butts or matches, do not light fires outside authorized areas, and do not abandon flammable waste. In a post on X on Sunday, June 28, the ministry stated: "In the forest, every gesture counts... With heat and wind, the risk increases. A small oversight can turn into a big fire."

Record-Breaking Heatwave

This week, Spain endured unprecedented, record-breaking heat, with temperatures exceeding 45°C in parts of the north. The heatwave, triggered by hot air from the Sahara Desert, shattered long-standing weather records and prompted widespread red alerts, especially in northern and central regions. The northern region of Cantabria surpassed its previous heat record, reaching 43.7°C in Tama. Bilbao Airport recorded temperatures above 40°C on three separate occasions (Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday), marking a historic milestone for the region.

Current Conditions and Risks

By Thursday, June 25, temperatures began to ease, with some rainfall and thunderstorms affecting northern and central plains, including Madrid. However, elevated temperatures persist, with areas like Andalusia, Seville, and Córdoba experiencing typical summer peaks of 37–38°C as the weekend closes. The ministry emphasized that with heat and wind, the risk of wildfires increases significantly.

Wildfire Outbreak

Spain has been severely affected by a major wildfire outbreak this week. One substantial fire broke out between Tamarite de Litera and Alcampell, burning over 4,000 hectares of land. It is believed a harvesting machine ignited the fire, prompting the evacuation of approximately 240 residents from three neighboring villages. The combination of extreme heat, parched conditions, and lightning strikes has triggered numerous blazes.

Spain's Vulnerability to Wildfires

Spain is among the most fire-susceptible nations in Europe, with extreme summer heat, prolonged dry spells, and strong winds creating tinderbox conditions. According to figures from Spain's Ministry for Ecological Transition, human activity accounts for the vast majority of wildfires. Over half of annual fires are intentionally started, while many result from accidents or carelessness, including agricultural burning, discarded cigarette butts, or barbecues.
