Wildfire on Tintwistle Moor Prompts Avoid Area Warning

A wildfire broke out on Tintwistle Moor near Glossop at around 10pm on Wednesday evening, June 24, prompting Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service to urge people to avoid the area and residents to keep windows and doors closed.

Large flames and plumes of smoke were visible from the Woodhead Pass as the fire continued into the early hours of Thursday morning. Crews from Glossop and New Mills were initially dispatched to the scene.

Crews Paused Overnight for Safety

Firefighters left the scene shortly after 2am on Thursday for safety reasons due to failing light. They returned at 4am and remain on site working to manage the wildfire. Plumes of smoke are still visible on the moorland.

A Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Firefighters are currently dealing with a wildfire on Tintwistle Moor, above Woodhead Road in Glossop. Crews from Glossop and New Mills are in attendance. If you can see or smell smoke, please keep your windows and doors closed. Please avoid the area."

Morning Update

In an update at 7:30am, the spokesperson added: "Firefighters are continuing to tackle the wildfire on Tintwistle Moor. Crews left the scene shortly after 02:00 hours this morning for safety reasons due to failing light. Firefighters from Chapel-en-le-Frith, Buxton and Hathersage were then mobilised at 04:00 hours and remain on scene. Please continue to keep windows and doors closed if you can see or smell smoke, and avoid the area."
