A courageous 12-year-old dog, partially blind and facing overwhelming odds, has been hailed as a hero after fending off a bear that broke into her family's home in New Mexico. The elderly canine, named Honey, sustained catastrophic injuries during the brutal encounter in early March but successfully protected her owners and their livestock from the wild predator.
A Fearless Defender in the Face of Danger
According to her owner, Denise Martinez, the bear likely emerged from hibernation hungry and approached their property in the Cordova community. Honey, despite her age and visual impairment from a prior porcupine encounter, did not hesitate to confront the intruder. "She is our little savior – she's always been protective that way," Martinez told The Guardian. "She risked her life to save not just the coop, but her family, from that bear."
Severe Injuries and a Remarkable Recovery
Española Humane, a nonprofit shelter that treated Honey at its urgent care unit, described the dog's injuries as noticeable even from a distance. In a Facebook post, they detailed how the bear had ripped the skin from her neck, below the collar to under her chin. "It was hard to look at – and it did not look like something Honey would be able to overcome," Martinez recounted.
Surveillance footage later revealed that Honey had repeatedly driven the bear away, demonstrating unwavering bravery. The shelter's post emphasized, "We'll never know exactly how it unfolded in the dark of that night, but we know this: Honey stood her ground against something she had no business fighting. She took the hits so no one else would have to, and she drove a predator away from everything she loves."
Community Support and a Touching Outcome
Miraculously, no chickens or two horses kept by the family were harmed during the incident. Despite her life-threatening wounds, Honey is now on the path to recovery, thanks to her family's love and community support. The shelter praised her resilience, noting, "Honey didn't just survive. She stood between her family and danger, and chose them—over and over again, even when it could have cost her everything."
In a lighter note, the post also mentioned that Honey, now dubbed the "bear slayer," remains afraid of vacuum cleaners, adding a touch of humor to her heroic tale. This story underscores the profound bond between pets and their owners, highlighting how even an elderly, disabled dog can display extraordinary courage in protecting her home.
