Elderly Dog Defends Family Farm from Bear Attack in New Mexico
An elderly, half-blind dog has been celebrated as a true hero after courageously confronting a bear on her family's property in New Mexico. Honey, a 12-year-old canine, suffered severe injuries during the evening of March 3 while protecting the Martinez family farm located in the foothills of Cordova.
A Guardian on the Land
Denise Martinez, Honey's owner, described the dog as their "little savior," noting she has earned the nickname "the bear slayer." Interestingly, the family discovered that despite her bravery against wildlife, Honey remains afraid of household vacuum cleaners. On the night of the incident, Denise observed Honey intently tracking something in the yard, though she couldn't identify the threat at the time.
On the family farm, Honey had taken on the role of caretaker, using her keen animal instincts and exceptional sense of smell to monitor for potential dangers to both the family and their livestock. Her vigilance proved critical when a bear, freshly emerged from hibernation and likely seeking food, approached the property.
Discovery of Severe Injuries
The next morning, Denise's daughter Leanna made a distressing discovery: Honey lying helplessly on the driveway with major injuries to her face, head, and neck. "Her face was swollen on the left, so I turned her head to the right, and that's when I saw her whole neck was just ripped from the back all the way down," Leanna recounted. The swelling was so severe that the beloved dog was initially unrecognizable.
Evidence of the bear's presence was clear throughout the property. Fences and trees bore massive scratch marks, and security camera audio captured the animal's ferocious roars, as reported by the Guardian. Despite the terrifying encounter, thanks to Honey's intervention, none of the family's 60 chickens or two horses were harmed.
Emergency Veterinary Care and Recovery
Another family dog, Zoe, also encountered the bear but escaped with only minor scratches and a bump to the head, attributed to Honey's defensive actions. Denise and Leanna rushed Honey to an emergency veterinarian, but the estimated treatment costs left them fearful they couldn't afford to save her life.
They turned to Española Humane's new low-cost clinic, where Honey received treatment for her injuries at a fraction of the expected price. The New Mexico-based nonprofit organization raises funds to provide shelter and medical care to thousands of animals in need.
In a social media post detailing Honey's ordeal, the organization described her injuries as "catastrophic," including a devastating degloving wound extending from her neck into her face, deep punctures, unbelievable bruising and swelling, and lacerations that "told the story her voice never would."
A History of Resilience
Honey was treated with heavy bandaging and medication, but she requires constant care due to a deep, open wound that may take months to fully heal. This isn't the first time Honey has shown remarkable resilience. Years earlier, a porcupine attack left her blind in one eye, and she had previously survived parvovirus, a highly contagious disease that attacks white blood cells and the gastrointestinal tracts of dogs and wolves, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.
Denise expressed that her family is "beyond grateful" to Española Humane for saving Honey's life without imposing an immense financial burden. "The care, compassion and support they've given through her recovery and dressing changes made the impossible possible for us," she wrote on social media. "Without them, we wouldn't have been able to afford the care she needed. They truly gave our Honey a second chance and we will never forget it."
