A major rescue operation was launched on Friday afternoon off the coast of East Yorkshire amid fears a family of four had gotten into difficulty in the sea.
Massive Multi-Agency Response
HM Coastguard confirmed it received reports of an incident off Withernsea at approximately 3.10pm on Friday, January 2. A significant search and rescue mission was immediately initiated, involving multiple agencies battling what were described as "horrendous" and treacherous conditions.
The operation saw the deployment of an HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter and a fixed-wing aircraft. Coastguard Rescue Teams from Withernsea, Hornsea, and Hull were dispatched to the scene. On the water, the RNLI's inshore lifeboat from Withernsea and all-weather lifeboat from Bridlington were tasked, alongside Humber Rescue's inshore lifeboat.
Treacherous Conditions Hinder Efforts
The search continued well into the evening despite severe challenges posed by the weather. Hornsea Inshore Rescue reported being unable to launch its lifeboat due to three-metre waves breaking on their slipway, which risked knocking their tractor and trailer sideways. The team instead sent a 4x4 vehicle with a casualty care crew to Withernsea.
Other emergency services in attendance included Yorkshire Ambulance Service, an air ambulance, Humberside Police, and Humberside Fire and Rescue. A spokesperson for the fire service confirmed they were called at around 3.40pm and were present at Withernsea's central promenade area, urging the public to avoid the location to allow emergency vehicles access.
Community and Council Response
The incident occurred as temperatures plunged in the seaside town, located roughly 18 miles east of Hull. The East Riding of Yorkshire Council had its severe weather emergency protocol activated in response to the harsh conditions.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the identities or the exact number of those involved, but initial reports centred on a potential family group. The extensive search effort underscores the grave concerns held by all responding services as they work against time and the elements.
