UK First: Wind Turbines Powered by High-Speed Trains Installed
Wind Turbines Powered by High-Speed Trains: UK First

LNER has achieved a UK first by installing three experimental wind turbines alongside the East Coast Main Line at Hitachi Rail's Craigentinny depot in Edinburgh. Developed in partnership with Treeva, a clean energy firm, these turbines are specifically designed to capture the turbulent airflow created by passing high-speed trains and convert it into electricity.

Innovative Design and Operation

The six-foot-tall turbines, whimsically named Windiana Jones, Sir Spins-a-lot, and AC Breezy, are constructed from upcycled materials and operate without a direct grid connection. This trial aims to measure the energy output generated by the trains' wake, with LNER stating that a single turbine can power a third of a small station's lighting needs or operate four CCTV cameras.

Potential for Wider Rollout

This initiative is part of the Future Labs rail industry innovation scheme, which supports novel sustainability projects. If successful, the technology could be deployed across Britain's rail network, potentially reducing over 12,000 kilograms of CO2 annually. The trial marks a significant step toward integrating renewable energy generation into existing transport infrastructure.
