As spring arrives and summer approaches, countless Brits are turning their attention to garden maintenance, with many dreaming of that first fresh-cut grass smell. However, experts are issuing a crucial warning: failing to check your lawn mower before the initial mow could result in a patchy, discoloured lawn vulnerable to disease.
The Risks of a Neglected Mower
Glenn Peskett, a DIY specialist at circular saw blade supplier Saxton Blades, emphasises that lawn mowers left in cold, damp sheds over winter require a thorough inspection. "When you pull the cord on a blunt, dirty machine, you aren't cutting the grass; you're essentially ripping it out by its roots," he explains. "It's a traumatic start to the season for any lawn."
Peskett compares a neglected mower to blunt scissors, which shred grass rather than cutting it cleanly. This damage can leave lawns susceptible to discolouration and fungal infections, undermining months of careful cultivation.
A Simple 15-Minute 'Spring Detox'
Fortunately, Peskett recommends a straightforward 15-minute 'spring detox' for lawn mowers, which can prevent these issues. The process involves three key checks:
- Inspect the Blades: With the spark plug disconnected, tilt the mower and examine the blades for dents and nicks. Any damage necessitates replacement to ensure a clean cut.
- Check the Fuel: Petrol deteriorates over time, turning gummy if left in the tank during winter. This can block the carburettor, so drain old fuel and start afresh.
- Clean the Undercarriage: Use a plastic putty knife to scrape away dried grass clippings accumulated beneath the mower. This improves airflow and results in a neater cut.
Additionally, Peskett advises replacing or cleaning the air filter, as a clogged filter starves the engine of oxygen, reducing efficiency.
Why Timing Matters
Performing these checks now, before the first mow, is critical. A well-maintained mower not only preserves lawn health but also enhances the machine's longevity and performance throughout the summer. "Fifteen minutes now will have your lawn in better shape for spring," Peskett notes, highlighting that proactive maintenance can save time and effort later.
By following these simple steps, gardeners can ensure their lawns remain lush and vibrant, avoiding the pitfalls of patchy grass and disease. As the season progresses, this attention to detail will pay dividends in achieving that coveted pristine green expanse.
