As the new year prompts a domestic reset, many across the UK face the perennial battle against stubborn bathroom grime. For those in hard water areas, the chalky, white marks left by evaporating tap water are a particular frustration.
The Viral Natural Cleaning Solution
Seeking a chemical-free method, one London-based writer put a popular social media tip to the test. The hack, championed by TikTok creator Chantel Mila, promises to dissolve hard water deposits and soap scum using just two simple ingredients: one cup of white vinegar and ten drops of clove oil.
Hard water stains are a common issue in the capital and many parts of the country, caused by high concentrations of minerals like calcium and magnesium. When the water dries, these minerals remain as unsightly deposits that can eventually build into tough limescale.
Why This Natural Mix Works
The cleaning power of white vinegar comes from its acetic acid content. This natural acidity is effective at breaking down grease, grime, bacteria, and the mineral compounds found in limescale.
Clove oil adds another layer of cleaning prowess. Its key component, eugenol, possesses natural antifungal and antiseptic properties, which can help combat mould. An added benefit is that the strong, spicy scent of the oil helps to mask the pungent odour of the vinegar.
Putting the Hack to the Test
In a practical trial on 10th January 2026, the mixture was combined in a jug and applied with a sponge to shower glass plagued by water marks and soap residue. The results were impressively swift.
Almost instantly, the solution began to fade the hard water stains. After treating the inside of the glass, marks on the opposite side became clearly visible and were tackled in a second round. A rinse with hot water and a dry with a towel revealed a dramatic transformation.
The glass was left significantly clearer, with only faint traces of soap scum remaining. The tester concluded that a second application would likely remove this residual grime completely.
Tackling Mould and Soap Scum
Chantel Mila also recommends the spray as a multi-purpose solution for bathroom mould. The tester applied it to corners with build-up and to soap scum near the shower drain and sink.
While the vinegar and clove oil blend cut through light layers of soap scum with some scrubbing, its effect on darker mould spots was less conclusive. Despite allowing the solution to soak in, the mould remained, suggesting that more potent treatment might be needed for established fungal growth.
For the ubiquitous problem of hard water stains and everyday soap scum, however, this natural duo presents a powerful, eco-friendly alternative to harsh chemical cleaners. It proves that a simpler, minimalist approach to cleaning can yield sparkling results.
