Check Your Passport for 4 Issues That Could Stop You Flying

Brits planning a holiday abroad should carefully examine their passport pages for four potential issues that could lead to being refused boarding at the airport. Damaged pages may require an immediate replacement, and standard renewals can take up to three weeks, so checking well in advance is essential.

Passport Damage and Replacement Costs

Following a price hike last month, a standard passport renewal now costs £102. However, if a problem is discovered just days before travel, the one-day express service costs £239.50. GOV.UK warns: "If your passport is damaged you must replace it. You may not be able to travel with it."

The HM Passport Office considers a passport damaged if any pages are torn, cut, missing, or stained (e.g., ink or water damage). It is also deemed damaged if:

  • Your details are unreadable
  • There are holes, cuts, or tears in the cover
  • The cover is coming away

Passport Expiry Requirements

Requirements vary by destination. Some countries require at least six months remaining on your passport upon arrival, while others require only three. For a full breakdown by country, visit the Government website.

Applying for a Passport Online

To apply online, you need a digital photograph, a valid payment method (credit or debit card), and your existing passport if renewing. Applicants must also provide proof of identity and citizenship. The adult fee is £102, and children's passports cost £66.50.

Local Post Office branches offer support services, including taking your digital photo and helping with the online application, for an extra charge.

Postal Applications

Paper applications are available from your local Post Office but take longer to process and cost £115.50. You must submit a completed form, supporting documents, two photographs, and the fee. Post Office staff can assist with the form, but you need to supply your own photos. Payment can be made with cash, debit, or credit cards.

Fast-Track Applications

If the standard three-week processing time is too slow, faster options are available. You need an appointment at a passport office:

  • Same-day premium service: £239.50 (or £253.50 for the 54-page frequent traveller passport)
  • One-week express service: £192 for an adult passport (or £206 for the 54-page version), and £156.50 for a child's passport (or £170.50 for the 54-page version)
