A Texas-based veterinarian has disclosed the five dog breeds she would never personally own, citing a range of common health issues that prospective owners should consider. Dr Rachel Siu, who treats a variety of exotic pets, dogs, and cats, shared her insights in a 2022 YouTube video to her 254,000 subscribers.
Huskies: Beautiful but Demanding
Dr Siu highlighted huskies as the first breed, noting their beauty, intelligence, and playful nature. However, as working dogs, they require a job to do and thrive in cold climates, making them unsuitable for hot and humid regions like Texas. They also shed heavily, and Dr Siu emphasised the importance of choosing a breed that matches one's lifestyle and environment.
Dachshunds: Cute but Prone to Spinal Issues
Dachshunds, described as cute and unique, are particularly susceptible to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), the most common spinal condition in dogs. Owners must prevent them from jumping off high surfaces and should set aside funds for potential back surgery, which can be expensive.
Great Danes: Affectionate but Short-Lived
Great Danes are affectionate goofballs, but Dr Siu's sole concern is their relatively short lifespan. They mature quickly and develop health issues early, requiring owners to be emotionally prepared for their early passing.
Doodles: Misunderstood as Hypoallergenic
Dr Siu advised against doodles, a Poodle crossbreed, despite their reputation as hypoallergenic and low-shedding. She explained that they often shed and require extensive grooming to prevent matting. Some doodles also display serious behavioural issues. She suggested opting for a poodle with a doodle-style cut instead.
Bulldogs: Brachycephalic Breeds with Breathing Problems
Bulldogs and other brachycephalic breeds struggle to breathe due to their elongated soft palates and short faces. Dr Siu noted they are also prone to IVDD and allergies, making them generally unhealthy. If she rescued one, she would ensure they receive airway surgery to improve their quality of life. She urged prospective owners to consider alternative breeds.
