Beverley Callard, best known for her role as Liz McDonald on Coronation Street, has shared an emotional update on her cancer battle. The 69-year-old actress was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer in February and has been keeping fans informed throughout her treatment.
Following surgery in March, it was discovered that the cancer had spread to a lymph node. After further tests in the United States, Callard took to Instagram on Thursday to reveal the results. She said: 'I've got absolutely great news, one of the lymph nodes that they'd sent over for testing to see how aggressive the cancer would be and it's on low numbers, which is really good. That means I can begin the radiotherapy very soon.'
Visibly emotional, Callard described feeling 'relieved' by the update. In the video, she popped champagne while her husband Jon McEwan remarked: 'What a f****** journey!' The actress captioned the post: 'Well… the results are in and we are popping the champagne! I can’t begin to explain the relief… now on to the next steps.'
Fans flooded the post with supportive messages, with one writing: 'Great news! Rest up ahead of RT and keep smiling.' Another said: 'So pleased for you Bev. You are being so strong and got great support around you.'
The positive news comes days after Callard had to pull out of the live final of I'm A Celebrity...South Africa due to her health. She had also experienced fatigue after a late-night Zoom interview, questioning whether that was an effect of cancer.
Callard first revealed her diagnosis in February on RTE’s Late Late Show, explaining that she received the news just 15 to 20 minutes before going on set for her new soap Fair City in Ireland. She said: 'My head was a bit mashed for the first few days. It’s very early stages, and I’m along with thousands of other women as well.'
