Bake Off Champion Announces Arrival of 'Beautiful Little Lila'
Matty Edgwell, who won The Great British Bake Off in 2023, has become a father for the first time. The former P.E. and Science teacher and his wife, Lara, have welcomed a baby daughter. Matty, 30, shared the happy news on Instagram just before Christmas, posting sweet pictures of their newborn.
Heartfelt Announcement and Festive Timing
In his social media post, Matty captured the moment he carried his newborn out of hospital in a car seat. He wrote emotionally, 'A picture that felt a million miles away this time last year.' He introduced his daughter, saying, 'Welcome to the world our beautiful little Lila.'
He was full of praise for his wife, adding, 'Both Mum and baby doing amazing. In awe of how well Lara done throughout the pregnancy and she's already the best Mum to our little girl.' Noting the perfect timing, the new dad wrote, 'We didn't have to wait long for our first Christmas. Merry Christmas everyone.'
Fellow Bakers Flood with Congratulations
The comment section was quickly filled with warm wishes from the Bake Off community. Fellow 2023 contestant Nicky Laceby called it 'such wonderful news,' while Cristy Sharp hoped they were enjoying the 'baby bliss.'
Stars from the 2024 series also joined in. Illiyin Morrison sent 'massive congratulations,' Andy Ryan wished them a wonderful Christmas, and the 2024 winner, Georgina Elizabeth, commented on their 'amazing Christmas.' Matty's colleague and fellow baker Dan Hunter humorously noted they would need a new stocking for the baby.
Matty also added a clever musical nod to his daughter's name by uploading the Oasis hit 'Lyla' alongside his post.
From Bake Off Triumph to Wedding Bells and Fatherhood
Matty's life has changed significantly since his Bake Off victory. Shortly after winning the Channel 4 show two years ago, he proposed to Lara in Sorrento, Italy. He has always credited Lara for encouraging him to apply for the baking competition.
After his win, he said, 'I hope GBBO might just change my life a little bit.' He also revealed that his next big baking project would be making their wedding cake. The couple tied the knot in May 2024 at South Farm in Hertfordshire. Now, just over six months later, they have embarked on their newest adventure as parents to baby Lila.
