Angie Best, the 73-year-old former wife of football legend George Best, has shared an emotional update from hospital as she undergoes an unconventional 'mistletoe' chemotherapy treatment for cancer. Posting on Instagram on Thursday, she uploaded a photo from a Swiss medical facility showing her connected to an IV drip, captioning it: 'Trying to fake a smile, didn't realise how sick I was, couldn't wait so in Switzerland for chemo with Mistletoe.'
The update comes just over a week after her son Calum, 44, revealed that she had been diagnosed with colon cancer that has spread to her liver. Mistletoe therapy, which uses extracts from the European mistletoe plant, is an alternative treatment used in parts of Europe but is not approved by the NHS due to inconclusive evidence on its effectiveness.
Angie's post received an outpouring of support. Calum commented: 'You are some woman and I love you so much, we got this.' TV presenter Jenny Powell sent 'positive and healing vibes', while model Paul Sculfor wished her 'strength and wellness.'
Angie also shared a meme questioning conventional cancer research, titled 'the cancer scam', which claimed that despite billions spent on research, cancer deaths have increased by 75% since the 1990s. This follows Calum's earlier emotional video announcing his mother's diagnosis and launching a GoFundMe page to fund her specialist treatment.
In her own message alongside Calum's announcement, Angie said she is 'ready to fight' the disease, adding: 'Consultations and research all takes dosh which I don't have... Wish me luck, Onwards and upwards Homies.'
