Tragedy at Prestigious Manhattan School
A 16-year-old student has died after falling from the fifth floor of Regis High School, a prestigious private school in Manhattan, on Thursday morning. The teenage boy was reportedly waiting outside a disciplinary office before the tragic incident occurred.
Chronology of a Tragedy
The incident took place around 9:30am at the all-male Jesuit school located on the Upper East Side. According to reports, the student had been waiting outside a first-floor administrator's office regarding a disciplinary matter when he unexpectedly walked up to the fifth floor.
Emergency services responded to a 911 call at 9:29am and found the teenager with injuries consistent with falling from height. The student was rushed to Weill Cornell Medical Center where he was initially listed in stable condition, but tragically succumbed to his injuries around 11:45am.
Community Reaction and Mental Health Concerns
The New York Police Department confirmed the incident remains under investigation and that no arrests have been made. The identity of the student hasn't been released pending notification of family members.
Virginia Maloney, the New York City councilmember-elect for the district, described the event as 'every parent's worst fear'. In a statement on X, she emphasised that 'our kids are carrying more than we often realize' and called for increased mental health resources in schools, including counsellors with proper capacity and systems to identify struggling students earlier.
Regis High School, which describes itself as providing an 'academically exceptional Jesuit education in a caring community', is a tuition-free private school serving 540 Catholic boys. The school notified families about the incident and dismissed students early following the tragedy.
