A woman has recounted how she was left perilously close to death after her breast implants ruptured, leaking dangerous silicone throughout her body. Carol Paredes, aged 52, underwent life-saving surgery following a series of catastrophic health complications that began with her cosmetic procedure.
From Fitness Coach to Wheelchair User
Carol, a former fitness coach from Miami, Florida, decided to get breast implants in 2016 after feeling dissatisfied with her B-cup chest. She spent £3,600 on the surgery with a surgeon who was highly recommended. However, her quest for what she described as perfection nearly cost her everything.
"I was deteriorating," Carol explained. "I couldn't stand, walk or sleep. And I was living in pain 24/7. I went from being strong and active to ending up in a wheelchair. My body was shutting down and no one could explain why."
A Cascade of Medical Crises
Within a few years, Carol developed excruciating pain in her groin, which doctors initially dismissed as stress or psychological. By 2021, her condition had worsened dramatically. She was diagnosed with rapidly progressing arthritis that left her paralysed, and she resorted to desperate measures, including alternative therapies.
It was only after consulting a chiropractor, who charged £735 for a consultation, that Carol learned her symptoms were linked to her breast implants. An MRI scan confirmed her worst fears: the left implant had ruptured, and silicone was leaking into her body, poisoning her system.
Emergency Surgery and Further Complications
The situation quickly became a medical emergency. Surgeons raced to remove the implants in December 2022, but the procedure led to an infection. This infection, in turn, caused an aneurysm, necessitating open-heart surgery in March 2024.
During this harrowing period, Carol also suffered dislocated hips from a chiropractic adjustment, requiring two hip replacement surgeries in 2023. The financial toll was immense, with Carol accumulating £11,000 in debt. She relied on a GoFundMe campaign, sold her belongings, and even her parents' apartment to cover the costs.
A Warning to Others
Today, Carol still experiences after-effects, including difficulty walking, but she is in significantly less pain. She shares her story on social media, receiving messages from women worldwide who relate to her experience. Her aim is to raise awareness about the potential dangers of cosmetic surgery.
"I lost five years of life, as well as plunging myself into debt," Carol said. "If you've got a mysterious illness after having implants, get them removed. I didn't know what was happening to me until it was almost too late. Don't risk your life trying to be perfect – as there's no such thing."
Her ordeal underscores the importance of thorough research and consideration before undergoing cosmetic procedures, highlighting how a pursuit of aesthetic enhancement can lead to severe, life-altering consequences.
