Daisy Edgar-Jones Shares Endometriosis Diagnosis After Years of Unexplained Pain
Normal People star Daisy Edgar-Jones has opened up about her diagnosis with endometriosis, a chronic health condition that has impacted her life for years. The actress revealed this personal health struggle while discussing her skincare and beauty routines in a recent interview.
Years of Unexplained Symptoms
During a video for Vogue's Beauty Secrets series, the 27-year-old actress reflected on her journey with unexplained pain and hormonal issues. "I have endometriosis, so my hormones are kind of all over the place," Daisy explained candidly. She described experiencing painful periods and volatile skin for many years before receiving her diagnosis at age 24.
The actress expressed relief at finally understanding what her body had been going through. "For so long, I had such painful periods and really volatile skin. I was diagnosed when I was, I think, I was 24. I was definitely relieved to find out why I was going through it," she shared.
Understanding Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a chronic condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows elsewhere in the body. The condition is characterized by:
- Debilitating inflammation and scarring
- Severe pain that can be debilitating
- Four distinct stages of progression
- Symptoms that often mimic cancer
According to NHS statistics, endometriosis affects approximately one in ten women of reproductive age in the United Kingdom. This translates to an estimated 1.5 million people living with the condition nationwide. Currently, there is no known cure for endometriosis, making management of symptoms crucial for those affected.
Managing Symptoms Through Lifestyle
Daisy discussed how she manages her endometriosis symptoms through specific lifestyle choices and skincare routines. "I've found over the years, like, skincare that really works for me, but I also ... drinking lots of water, and when I eat well, especially when I try and not eat as much dairy, that really helps," she revealed.
The actress also reflected on her teenage struggles with severe acne, which she now understands was connected to her hormonal imbalances. "I had extremely bad acne for most of my teenage years. When I had terrible acne, it was all I could see when I looked in the mirror," she recalled.
Message of Hope and Self-Acceptance
Daisy offered words of encouragement to others struggling with similar health issues or skin conditions. "But actually, when I look back at photos and videos, it's funny that so much of the beauty of you is inside, and the confidence that you wear can really help," she said thoughtfully.
She added a specific message for those dealing with acne: "So I would say to anyone with acne – I know it's all you can see, but it's not what everyone else can see."
Career Success Amid Health Challenges
Despite her health struggles, Daisy Edgar-Jones has achieved remarkable success in her acting career. Born in Islington, north London, she grew up around the entertainment industry with her father Phil working in television and her mother Wendy being a former film editor.
