Scammers are sending fake NHS text messages about meningitis vaccines to exploit public fear following an outbreak in Kent, according to scam alert experts. The messages appear convincing and ask recipients to book MenB vaccine appointments, but the NHS never requests payment for vaccines.
The outbreak, linked to Canterbury's Club Chemistry nightclub, has led to 20 confirmed cases and nine suspected cases of meningococcal disease as of 22 March. Two people have died. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and NHS England have launched a targeted vaccination programme for those in close contact with cases, University of Kent students at the Canterbury campus, and staff at the nightclub between 5 and 15 March.
TikTok user Caroline, who posts scam alerts, reported that fake texts, WhatsApp messages, and emails are circulating. These messages may look identical to genuine NHS communications but ask recipients to click links and provide personal or bank details. The NHS may ask for a date of birth via a link but never for payment or financial information.
To verify a legitimate message, recipients should check the NHS website or app for any booking requests. The UKHSA says the risk to the wider public remains low, as MenB requires close and prolonged contact to spread.
