Mum Drops Over 20 Stone Without Surgery After Rollercoaster Ordeal
A mother-of-three has revealed how a humiliating rollercoaster incident became the catalyst for her remarkable weight loss journey, shedding over 20 stone without surgery or medical jabs. Fiona Carter, 46, from Bexleyheath, was removed from a theme park ride "in front of hundreds" after staff declared her overweight frame posed a safety risk.
Devastating Theme Park Experience
Fiona described the moment as utterly mortifying when the safety bar wouldn't close over her body during a family day out. "I was told the ride couldn't run and that I would be putting others at risk," she recalled. "I just wanted the ground to swallow me up." This traumatic experience led her to withdraw from public life, avoiding social gatherings and even simple activities with her children.
Convinced that weight loss surgery represented her only viable option, Fiona visited her GP in August 2018 and received a referral for gastric bypass surgery. However, she needed to lose three stone before the procedure could proceed, prompting her to join her local Slimming World group in September 2018.
Transformation Through Healthy Eating
What began as a pre-surgery requirement evolved into a life-changing transformation. After achieving her initial three-stone target by January 2019, Fiona discovered such success with Slimming World's Food Optimising plan that she declined surgery entirely. She continued with the programme, ultimately losing 20st 8lbs – more than half her body weight – earning her the title of Slimming World's Greatest Loser 2026.
Fiona's weight journey:
- Starting weight: 35st (222.26kg)
- Weight loss: 20st 8lbs (130.63kg)
- Current weight: 14st 6lbs (91.63kg)
- Height: 5ft 6in (1.676m)
Dietary Transformation
The contrast between Fiona's eating habits before and after her weight loss journey is striking. Previously consuming four slices of buttered toast with jam for breakfast, multiple sandwiches with mayonnaise for lunch, and large takeaway kebabs with chips for dinner, she now enjoys overnight oats with Greek yoghurt, chicken salads, and homemade spaghetti bolognese.
"What I like most about Food Optimising is how practical and flexible it is," Fiona explained. "It doesn't rely on restriction or cutting out entire food groups. I can fill myself up on healthy foods like fruit, vegetables, lean protein and wholegrains and still enjoy the food I love."
Renewed Energy and Confidence
As the weight dropped off, Fiona's world expanded dramatically. Previously struggling with basic activities like playing with her children or climbing stairs, she now visits the gym three times weekly and enjoys regular walks. "I feel stronger, more energetic and capable of doing things I never thought possible before," she said.
Her consultant, Vikki Walsh, described witnessing Fiona's transformation as "one of the greatest privileges of my career." She added: "Fiona is living proof of what's possible when compassion, community and determination come together."
Looking Toward the Future
Now engaged to partner Steve and planning a March 2027 wedding, Fiona reflects on how her weight loss has transformed every aspect of her life. "Losing weight hasn't just changed my body, it's given me confidence, independence and a happier, fuller life," she said.
Fiona hopes her story provides inspiration to others who feel trapped by their weight. "I hope my story gives hope to other people who might feel trapped by their weight, showing that change is possible and drastic procedures aren't the only option," she concluded.
