A perfectly cooked jacket potato is a quintessential comfort food, offering a fluffy, steaming centre paired with crispy, well-seasoned skin. However, achieving this ideal texture can be elusive with different cooking techniques. In a quest to determine the best method, we conducted a head-to-head comparison between the air fryer and the traditional oven, focusing on texture, taste, and cooking time.

Setting Up the Baked Potato Experiment

For a fair test, we used similarly sized baking potatoes, each scrubbed clean and coated in oil and sea salt. To expedite the process and enhance fluffiness, both potatoes were given a preliminary six-minute blast in a 900W microwave. This step is crucial as it significantly reduces overall cooking time and helps create that desirable fluffy interior. While some may rely solely on microwaving, it fails to deliver the satisfying crispy skin that defines a superior baked potato.

Oven-Baked Potato Results

After the microwave pre-cooking, the first potato was transferred to a baking tray and placed in a preheated oven at 200°C Fan. Following 40 minutes of cooking, the spud emerged with a beautifully golden and crisp skin. However, upon slicing it open, the interior revealed inconsistencies: it was reasonably fluffy but somewhat parched in certain areas while remaining undercooked in others. This uneven cooking can detract from the overall eating experience, leaving parts dry and others lacking in texture.

Air Fryer Baked Potato Results

The second potato, prepared identically, was placed in an air fryer basket after its microwave session. Cooked at 200°C for 20 minutes, it developed a wonderfully crisp skin that appeared even more golden than its oven-baked counterpart. Cutting into it showcased a uniformly cooked interior that fluffed up effortlessly, with the skin boasting excellent texture and flavour. The air fryer method proved superior in delivering consistent results throughout the potato.

The Clear Winner in Texture and Speed

Between the two techniques, the air fryer emerged as the undisputed champion. It produced a potato that was perfectly cooked throughout, with a light and fluffy interior and a crispy exterior that provided superior structure. The crispness of the skin also made it ideal for loading up with satisfying fillings like baked beans, cheese, or tuna mayo. Notably, the air fryer achieved these results in half the time of the oven method, making it a more efficient choice for busy lifestyles.

This comparison highlights the air fryer's advantages in both speed and consistency, offering a reliable way to achieve that dream combination of crispy skin and fluffy centre without the uneven cooking often seen with traditional ovens.
