A woman has shared a simple lettuce storage hack that could help keep it crisp and fresh for up to two weeks longer. Lettuce heads were still crisp and fresh after 10 days following a simple storage change.
Lettuce makes a brilliant addition to your shopping list as temperatures start to climb. It is ideal for whipping up wraps, crisp salads, or other speedy dishes in less than five minutes. That said, keeping lettuce fresh can be surprisingly challenging — it wilts at an alarming rate.
Journalist Katherine McPhillips is a fan of fresh lettuce but found herself frustrated by how rapidly it turned soggy. She wrote: "I recently realised that not only was I wasting money but the wilted leaves were leaking water as they spoiled. This excess amount of moisture got all over my crisper drawer, which meant I had to deep clean my fridge and throw away a lot of other vegetables, as it was causing them to rot too. It was really annoying having to replace so much food, so I decided to do a little research and discovered that keeping lettuce in its original supermarket packaging is actually one of the worst ways to store it."
It turns out that lettuce naturally contains a considerable amount of water, which begins to leak out after harvesting, and storing it in plastic wrap locks all that moisture inside a confined space. This results in lettuce quickly becoming slimy, discoloured, and even mouldy as it decays, while simultaneously causing any nearby produce to start spoiling as well.
Most shoppers simply chuck their lettuce straight into the fridge after getting home from the supermarket, but spending just two minutes unwrapping it and ditching the plastic packaging can dramatically extend its shelf life.
How to store lettuce to keep it fresh for longer
Katherine opted to test a storage trick for her lettuce — and she confirmed it works brilliantly. She explained: "I decided to try storing it the right way after doing a food shop last week, and I am happy to report that my lettuce is still crispy and fresh almost two weeks later. All I did was throw away the plastic the lettuce came in and instead wrapped it up in tin foil, which has greatly helped extend its shelf life."
The key to keeping lettuce fresh is to make sure it is not being stored in plastic. Unlike plastic, tin foil is not airtight, which means moisture does not build up. Being a far more breathable material, water evaporates instead of gathering around the leaves. It maintains the lettuce at a cool temperature with precisely the right amount of humidity to preserve its crispness, rather than leaving it waterlogged as plastic often does.
Using tin foil also protects the other contents of the fridge, eliminating any worry about finding a slimy disaster first thing in the morning. Storing lettuce correctly is simple — just tear off a large piece of tin foil, wrap it loosely around the lettuce, and position it at the bottom of the fridge.
It takes very little effort, yet after more than 10 days the lettuce stays completely fresh without any brown spots, making it definitely worth attempting if you are aiming to cut down on food waste.
