Two popular food items marketed to health-conscious consumers and gym-goers have been urgently recalled across Northern Ireland. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued a 'do not eat' alert for specific Purepower Nutrition products due to a serious labelling error that poses a potential health risk.
Details of the Recall and the Allergy Risk
The recall affects all batches of Purepower Nutrition's Chicken & Chorizo Paella (400g) and Chicken Chow Mein (400g) sold in Northern Ireland. The problem stems from a packaging mix-up: the Chicken & Chorizo Paella has been incorrectly packed with Chicken Chow Mein.
This is critical because the Chicken Chow Mein contains milk, an allergen which is not declared on the mispacked Paella's label. The FSA states this presents a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents. The Chicken Chow Mein is being recalled as a precautionary measure because it has been mispacked with the Paella.
What Consumers Need to Do
The affected products have use-by dates up to January 17, 2026, for the Chicken & Chorizo Paella and January 15, 2026, for the Chicken Chow Mein. They are sold at retailers including Tesco.
The official advice from Purepower Nutrition and the FSA is clear: If you have purchased either of these products, do not eat them. Instead, customers should return the items to the store where they were bought to receive a full refund. Point-of-sale notices explaining the situation have been issued to retailers.
Purepower Nutrition has confirmed that no other products in its range are affected by this recall. Consumers with concerns are directed to contact the company via email at quality@purepowernutrition.com.
Understanding Food Allergy Alerts
This incident is a standard example of when a food allergy alert is necessary. The FSA issues such alerts when a product is withdrawn or recalled because of missing or incorrect allergy labelling, creating a risk to public health. In this case, the mispacking error meant a major allergen was not declared, triggering the urgent action to protect consumers.
The company has been advised to contact relevant allergy support organisations to ensure their members are informed of the potential danger.
