Hantavirus Outbreak on MV Hondius: 11 Cases as Spanish Passenger Tests Positive
Hantavirus Outbreak on MV Hondius: 11 Cases Confirmed

Spanish authorities have confirmed that a passenger evacuated from the MV Hondius cruise ship, which is at the centre of a hantavirus outbreak, has tested positive for the virus. This development brings the total number of confirmed cases to 11, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Outbreak Details

All 11 cases of hantavirus are linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship. Among those infected, three individuals—either passengers or crew members—have died. The WHO has identified nine of the 11 confirmed cases as the Andes virus, a particularly severe strain of hantavirus.

Spanish Passenger's Condition

The infected Spanish passenger is currently quarantined in a military hospital in Madrid. Medical officials have confirmed that 13 other Spanish nationals who were evacuated from the ship have tested negative for the virus. The patient's condition is being closely monitored by healthcare professionals.

The MV Hondius, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, has been at the centre of the outbreak, which has raised concerns about the spread of hantavirus in confined environments such as cruise ships. The ship's captain, in an emotional video message, praised the passengers for their 'patience and discipline' during the ordeal.

Global Response

The WHO is coordinating with national health authorities to monitor the situation and prevent further spread. Hantavirus is transmitted through contact with rodent droppings, urine, or saliva, and can cause severe respiratory illness. The Andes virus is particularly concerning as it can be transmitted from person to person, although this is rare.

Authorities are urging anyone who has been on the MV Hondius to monitor their health and seek medical attention if they develop symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, and shortness of breath. The outbreak serves as a reminder of the potential health risks associated with cruise ship travel.
