Dawn Zuidgeest-Craft, a 72-year-old mother of four, is about to achieve a remarkable milestone: graduating from medical school. She will be the oldest-ever graduate of the St. James School of Medicine, and she plans to begin a three-year residency in family medicine at a Michigan hospital.
A Life-Changing Moment
Zuidgeest-Craft's decision to pursue medicine was sparked by a personal tragedy. In 2020, her husband suffered a near-fatal brain haemorrhage. The experience made her realise that 'life is short' and prompted her to follow her long-held dream of becoming a doctor. She had previously considered medical school earlier in her life but faced denials and various life circumstances that delayed her plans.
A Career Built on Experience
Before enrolling in medical school, Zuidgeest-Craft worked as a neonatal nurse practitioner for 45 years. Her daughter, Ginger Zee, the chief meteorologist for ABC News, noted that her mother's extensive hospital experience provided her with invaluable practical knowledge that will serve her well in her medical career.
Zuidgeest-Craft's journey is an inspiring example of perseverance and dedication. At 72, she is proving that it is never too late to pursue a passion and make a difference in the world.
