The acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has sought to reassure the public following a hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship that has left three people dead and five others ill. Dr. Jay Bhattacharya stated, 'This is not Covid,' emphasizing that the virus does not spread easily and urging the public to avoid panic.
Outbreak Details
The outbreak occurred on the MV Hondius cruise ship, leading to the evacuation of 17 Americans to a quarantine facility in Omaha. Seven other passengers have returned to five different states. The hantavirus, which began spreading last month, is contracted by inhaling contaminated particles from rodent droppings and is not easily transmitted between humans.
Public Health Response
Public health experts have criticised the CDC for what they describe as a 'missing in action' response. Critics labelled the agency's communication as 'empty and vapid,' questioning its effectiveness in managing international health crises. This criticism comes amid recent controversies within the CDC, including chaotic staff firings and re-hirings under the Trump administration.
Dr. Bhattacharya's remarks aim to calm concerns, but the incident has reignited debate over the CDC's role in global health emergencies. The agency continues to monitor the situation as passengers remain in quarantine.
