A 10-week-old Golden Retriever puppy named Kian is helping to break down barriers between guide dogs and motorbikes, as new research reveals that 57% of dogs in the UK find motorcycles stressful. The adorable pup met members of the Harley Owners Group in Kidderminster as part of a vital mission to prepare the next generation of guide dogs for the real world.
Why Socialisation Matters
For a guide dog assisting a person with sight loss, a sudden fright from a passing motorbike is not just scary—it can be dangerous. The Guide Dogs charity is calling on bikers to help with the socialisation of guide dog puppies, ensuring they become accustomed to the noise and unpredictability of traffic.
Meet Kian and the Bikers
Kian, a sweet 10-week-old Golden Retriever, met Harley-Davidson riders Emma Poole, Kevin Taplin, and Dave Brace in Kidderminster. The photos show the pup calmly interacting with the bikers and their motorcycles, a crucial step in his training.
Haley Andrews, Head of Puppy Raising at Guide Dogs, said: "Our research shows just how unsettling motorbikes can be for dogs. But for a guide dog, that fear isn't just a nuisance—it can be a genuine safety risk for the person relying on them."
She added: "Socialisation is such a fundamental part of a guide dog's training. Our puppies need to encounter the real world in all its noise and unpredictability."
