Surgeon Warns Smoking Is 'Single Most Dangerous Thing'

Cardiovascular surgeon Dr Jeremy London has declared that smoking is the 'single most dangerous thing' a person can do for their body, causing damage to every organ. With over 25 years of experience and more than one million Instagram followers, Dr London shared his warning during an episode of The Mel Robbins Podcast.

When asked what he absolutely avoids as a surgeon, Dr London replied: 'Smoking is top of the list.' He elaborated: 'I cannot come up with one single thing that does as much damage to every organ in the body as smoking cigarettes. And look, it's incredibly addictive, and I know that, and I pass no judgment because I know how difficult it is.'

Health Risks and Recovery

According to NHS Better Health, smoking can cause heart disease, cancer, vision loss, dementia, and high blood pressure, among other conditions. The health service notes: 'The good news is your body will start to heal almost immediately after you quit. Within just 20 minutes, your pulse rate will return to normal.'

After eight hours, harmful chemicals like carbon monoxide in the blood halve, allowing more oxygen to flow. After 10 years, the risk of dying from lung cancer is half that of a current smoker.

Support for Quitting

The NHS offers free local stop smoking services staffed by expert advisers, providing proven methods and professional support. They also help access nicotine replacement therapy and medicines. The NHS Quit Smoking app provides personalised support. More information is available on the NHS website.
