Trevor Nelson Takes Radio 2 Break for Health Issues

BBC Radio 2 DJ Trevor Nelson has announced he is stepping back from his broadcasting duties to focus on resolving undisclosed health issues. The 62-year-old presenter, known for his weekday afternoon slot on Radio 2 and Sunday show on BBC Radio 1Xtra, revealed he underwent tests following a routine medical check-up.

Absence from Regular Slots

Listeners noticed Nelson's absence from his weekday 2-4pm programme on Radio 2 this week. He also hosts a Sunday morning show on 1Xtra from 11am to 1pm. In a statement posted on Instagram, Nelson explained the reason for his sudden leave.

“I wanted to let my followers, radio listeners and all my Soul Nation party-people know that I’m going to be taking a little break from my work commitments,” he wrote. “Some of you may already have noticed that I’ve not been on my daily Radio 2 slot this week. After a routine check-up I was advised to have some follow up tests. As a result, I will be taking some further time off.”

Focus on Recovery

Nelson emphasized the importance of dealing with health matters based on facts rather than speculation. “As I’m sure you can appreciate with health issues, it’s important to deal with facts and not speculate,” he added. “So I’m concentrating on getting better, being back to 100% me and to getting back behind the mic and the decks.”

The DJ did not provide specific details about his condition but assured fans he is prioritizing his recovery. His message concluded with a commitment to return to his radio shows once fully recuperated.

Recent Recognition at TRIC Awards

Earlier this week, Nelson attended the Television and Radio Industries Club (TRIC) Awards, where he received the TRIC Special Award. Despite his health concerns, he was present to accept the honor. Additionally, listeners can still hear him present a pre-recorded concert, “The Music Is Black,” from Hackney Empire, which airs on BBC Radio 2 on Sunday night. The event, recorded last month, celebrates black music in Britain and features performances by Alison Limerick, Courtney Pine, and Omar, among others.
