UK households have been issued a warning about the dangers of paddling pools during the summer heatwave. Experts say that seemingly harmless paddling pools can quickly become a breeding ground for harmful bacteria if not properly maintained.
Expert Warning on Paddling Pool Safety
Jack Cox, Managing Director and Founder of Bromley Plumbers, urged Brits to monitor how long water has been sitting in their paddling pools. According to Cox, warm, shallow water that isn't filtered or treated creates an ideal environment for bacteria to multiply far faster than many parents expect.
Cox explained: "Even though paddling pools seem harmless, they can quickly become a mix of sweat, sunscreen, grass, parasites and bacteria when left standing in the heat."
The 48-Hour Rule
The common mistake, Cox says, is believing that a smaller paddling pool requires less maintenance than a larger swimming pool. To combat this, he recommends a 48-hour rule: families should clean their pools once emptied rather than just draining and refilling the water.
Cox added: "We'd encourage families not to assume the answer is simply draining and refilling every day, as that can quickly become costly and wasteful during a period of high water use."
Contamination Risks
Once pets and children use the same paddling pool, the rate of contamination increases significantly, particularly in hot weather when bacteria thrive. Cox emphasized that regular cleaning and sensible water management are key, rather than constantly starting from scratch.
"Small steps make a big difference in keeping water safer during prolonged hot spells," he said.
Practical Advice for Families
Cox rounded out his advice with a straightforward reminder for parents: with a few simple cleaning steps, families can keep paddling pools safer for longer while also reducing unnecessary water waste. The warning comes as the UK experiences a prolonged period of warm weather, with many families turning to paddling pools to cool off.
