Vet Urges Dog Owners to Carry Bandanas on Walks This Bank Holiday Weekend
Vet: Carry Bandanas for Dogs in Bank Holiday Heat

As the UK braces for a bank holiday weekend with temperatures soaring above 30°C, dog owners are being urged to take extra precautions to protect their pets. A vet with over 30 years of experience has highlighted a simple yet effective cooling method: carrying a soaked bandana.

Heatwave Forecast

The Met Office has named 21 counties facing a heat surge up to 33°C, with temperatures expected to reach 30°C on Saturday, 32°C on Sunday, and 33°C on Monday. These conditions pose serious risks to dogs, as they may not display obvious signs of overheating until it is too late.

The Bandana Cooling Trick

In a TikTok video, the vet, known as @pet_health_daily, advised: "Soak a bandana in cold water, ring it out, and tie it loosely around their neck before heading out." This acts like a cooling collar, helping regulate body temperature during walks or playtime. He warned against ignoring simple problems that can escalate into major health issues.

When Is It Too Hot to Walk Your Dog?

A Blue Cross statement explained that while there is no single temperature threshold, temperatures above 20°C increase the risk of heatstroke, especially during strenuous exercise. Dogs with underlying conditions like obesity are at risk even in cooler weather. Factors such as breed, coat, age, and brachycephalic (flat-faced) features also affect tolerance. Pavement heat can burn paw pads; "if it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws."

Recommendations include walking dogs early in the morning in shaded areas like woodlands, bringing fresh water and a bowl, and taking frequent breaks. During extreme heat, dogs should be kept indoors in a cool room. For bored dogs, training or treat puzzles can provide stimulation.

How to Keep Your Dog Happy During a Heatwave

  • Hydration: Ensure constant access to cool, clean water; add ice cubes to their bowl.
  • Shade: Provide shady spots using umbrellas, trees, or tarps if outdoors.
  • Limit exercise: Walk early or late, avoiding the hottest part of the day.
  • Never leave in a parked car: Cars heat up dangerously fast, even with windows cracked.
  • Cool treats: Offer frozen dog treats, ice cubes, or frozen peanut butter (no xylitol) or plain yogurt.
  • Cooling aids: Use cooling mats or damp towels for your dog to lie on; gently mist with water.
  • Avoid hot surfaces: Asphalt and sand can burn paws; walk on grass or shaded areas.
