40% of Gen Z Skip Festival Headliners for Sleep, Study Finds
40% of Gen Z Skip Festival Headliners for Sleep

A recent study has uncovered a surprising shift in festival priorities among younger generations. Nearly half of Gen Z-ers would choose a good night's sleep over watching a headline act, challenging the traditional hedonistic festival culture.

Gen Z Prioritises Rest Over Music

The research, commissioned by Subway, found that 40% of Gen Z respondents admitted they would be willing to miss a festival's main act to ensure they got enough rest. This marks a significant departure from the all-night partying often associated with music festivals.

Comfort has become a major factor, with 53% of UK adults considering a comfortable sleeping bag a festival essential. It is also the most annoying item to get soaked by rain while camping. Gen Z specifically cited an uncomfortable setup as the biggest detriment to sleep at festivals.

Reasons for Skipping Festivals

The top reasons Gen Z skip festivals include distance, cost, and bad weather, followed closely by uncomfortable sleeping conditions. For those who attend, forgetting a sleeping bag is considered the worst item to leave behind, even more so than a charger, underwear, or ID.

Comfort Trumps Headline Artists

For Gen Z, comfort (49%) ranks higher than watching headline artists (46%). Access to toilets, good food, and showers are deemed essential for the best festival experience. Additionally, 63% would opt for a designated 'quiet camping' area to avoid late-night parties.

Brits expect to average only 4.8 hours of sleep per night at festivals this year, with noisy surroundings, uncomfortable sleeping setups, and extreme temperatures as the biggest disruptors.

Subway's 'Sleeping Bag-uette'

To address these concerns, Subway has unveiled the 'Sleeping Bag-uette', a novelty sleeping bag measuring three metres in length, modelled after its Italian B.M.T. Sub. The bag is layered with fan-favourite toppings and designed for ultimate comfort.

Available for a limited time through an exclusive giveaway on Subway's UK & Ireland Instagram channel, fans can enter by commenting 'Snug in a Sub' on the designated post.

Kirstey Elston, EMEA Senior Marketing Director at Subway, said: 'We know festival season is about making unforgettable memories, but we don't want fans running on empty - whether it's lack of sleep or their stomachs. We wanted to bring the comfort of Subway to the fields, giving fans a way to recharge without missing a beat.'
