More than two-thirds of Britons are currently grappling with the winter blues, according to a major new study, with over half finding this season particularly harsh. The research, commissioned by MSC Cruises, paints a vivid picture of a nation yearning for sunlight and comfort during the long, cold month of January.
The Gloomy Reality of a British January
The survey of 2,000 UK adults revealed that 69% are suffering from the winter blues, with a significant 38% stating this winter feels even more depressing than the last. When asked to pinpoint the worst aspects of January, respondents were clear about their grievances.
Freezing weather topped the list of complaints for 54% of people. This was followed by the enduring long, dark nights, which bother 37% of the population. The post-Christmas comedown is also keenly felt, with 29% citing Christmas becoming a distant memory as a major downer. A further 24% reported struggling with a profound lack of motivation as the new year gets underway.
Britain's Favourite Pick-Me-Ups
It's not all doom and gloom, however. The study also uncovered the nation's arsenal of strategies to combat the seasonal slump. Almost half (49%) of those surveyed actively employ a list of tactics to stay upbeat.
The most popular remedy, favoured by 47% of Brits, is the simple pleasure of eating a whole bar of chocolate alone. Close behind, 41% find cheer by turning up the heating and getting cosy indoors. An equal proportion (41%) said booking a sunny holiday to look forward to is their key mood booster.
Embracing the outdoors still has its place, with a third (33%) of people stating that a crisp winter walk while wrapped up warm helps lift their spirits. The nation also finds comfort in smaller, homely joys:
- Pulling on a pair of cosy socks (29%)
- Ordering a favourite takeaway (24%)
- Binge-watching a beloved comedy series (23%)
- Re-watching a much-loved film (21%)
Other cherished activities include cuddling up with a pet dog (20%), making a luxurious hot chocolate with whipped cream (20%), and tucking into hot buttered crumpets (15%).
The Quest for Winter Sun and Innovative Solutions
The longing for sunlight is a powerful theme in the research. A substantial 56% of Brits admitted they love a bit of winter sun, and 19% said having a sunny escape to anticipate is crucial for their wellbeing. In fact, 20% of the nation jokes weekly about moving to another country during January.
When dreaming of the ideal winter sun temperature, the majority said they would be content with a mild 23 degrees Celsius—warm enough for t-shirts and shorts. In response to this widespread sun-seeking, MSC Cruises is trialling an innovative 'Sunbrella'. This cutting-edge device incorporates Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) lamp technology, allowing users to shield themselves from rain while basking in a warm, mood-lifting glow on gloomy days.
Antonio Paradiso, Vice President of International Sales at MSC Cruises, commented on the findings: "Our research shows just how much people are longing for sunshine this winter. The Sunbrella is a playful and eye-catching way to bring that feeling to life, but nothing compares to the real thing."
For those seeking authentic rays, the company is promoting winter sun holidays, with prices starting from £449 per person for a trip to the Caribbean aboard the MSC Seaside, departing on 2nd March 2026.
The study also listed other popular methods for beating the blues, including sorting out cupboards (14%), blasting favourite songs at full volume (14%), hitting the gym (13%), and even buying a lottery ticket. The full list of 25 remedies highlights a nation creatively navigating the challenges of the darkest season.
