David Attenborough at 100: Five Secrets to a Long and Healthy Life

Sir David Attenborough, the beloved natural historian, will celebrate his 100th birthday on 8 May. The milestone has sparked interest in the factors behind his longevity. Dr Mohammed Enayat, a GP and founder of longevity clinic HUM2N, defines longevity medicine as 'an approach that seeks to have your health working for you for as long as possible'. He emphasises that it involves interventions to prevent age-related decline.

Dr Enayat highlights movement as a key pillar. He advises breaking a sweat a couple of times a week to maintain metabolic health and muscle function. 'Try and work out your glutes, your hamstrings and your core,' he suggests, recommending exercises like planks, squats and ball sits.

Chronic stress is another concern. 'Stress drives a massive inflammatory response in the body,' Dr Enayat warns. He recommends developing self-awareness and tools such as breath work, meditation or gratitude to restore nervous system balance.

Sleep is crucial for longevity, as it supports immune function and regeneration. Dr Enayat advises avoiding blue light, late meals and alcohol to improve deep sleep. He also suggests blackout blinds and cooler sleeping environments.

Diet plays a vital role, as poor nutrition can lead to inflammation and chronic diseases. Dr Enayat stresses the importance of a balanced diet to maintain metabolic health.
