A fitness expert has revealed the secret to shedding pounds — and it has nothing to do with eating less. Online coach Sean Casey says some people have "no awareness" of an essential part of sticking to a diet.
The Hidden Calorie Trap
Posting on Instagram, Casey explained: "More food doesn't mean more calories. Weight loss can be a massive struggle for a lot of people, and there are many reasons why sticking to a calorie deficit is hard. But for some people, you genuinely just have no awareness of the calories you're consuming. The oils, sauces, butter, and full-sugar drinks — all the hidden calories that don't really fill you up. Hopefully, this video puts things into perspective."
In his video, the expert from Banbridge, Co Down, illustrated his point by comparing several meals throughout the day. Some were packed with calories but in small portions, while others offered considerably more food at a fraction of the calories.
Breakfast Comparison
He explained: "If you have a caramel latte and then two bits of toast buttered with a fried egg, you've just racked up 825 calories for your breakfast. That's back craic. Instead, you could have this egg and egg white omelette, all of this watermelon, these blueberries, and a black coffee with some sweetener, all for 455 calories. That's good craic."
Lunch Alternatives
He compared a lunch of four chicken tenders with 50g of mayonnaise, totalling 998 calories, against a toasted chicken pesto and cheese sandwich, alongside a generous portion of air-fried diced pumpkin, followed by a full plate of strawberries — which came to just 581 calories.
Snack Swaps
Further comparisons included a single pastry costing 361 calories. His alternative of 200g of high-protein yogurt, a banana, some dark chocolate, plus a cheese string comes in at 328 calories. He added: "Lastly, this is absolutely mental. If you have a bottle of Coke, a Snickers, and this packet of crisps, it's 798 calories. Instead, you could have this Coke Zero and all of this popcorn for only 294 calories. So, in total, you could have this tiny amount of food for 3002 calories, or you could have all of this for only 1600 calories."
Viewer Reactions
Viewers applauded him for drawing attention to the matter. Aileen commented: "Keep in mind as well that the higher volume options also have more fibre, protein and micronutrients, so you'll also just feel better overall making more of those swaps."
However, others raised queries. Ian remarked: "Good video but surely for the first two meals, the main issue is the latte and then the mayo. So I get the point you are making but you could massively improve both those meals just on the two bits. I'm a black coffee drinker so I'm OK but if you told a caramel latte drinker to switch to black coffee, good luck with that!"
Sean responded: "The point is people do use oils and sauces so it's to highlight where calories can add up. It's a bad example vs a good example so I used as many hidden calories as possible to prove the point."
