A veterinarian has revealed that pets can fake illnesses or injuries to gain attention from their owners. Alex the Vet, known on TikTok as @alex_thevet, explained that animals are highly perceptive and quickly learn which behaviours earn them extra affection.
According to Alex, the most common faked symptoms include a limp or appearing depressed. He noted that this behaviour often stems from a genuine incident where the pet received extra care, treats, or attention, creating a lasting memory. If their routine changes or they feel stressed, they may revert to that behaviour.
Key signs of fakery include inconsistency—such as forgetting to limp when they think no one is watching—and a sudden interest in food despite appearing unwell. Context is also important; changes in daily habits can trigger such behaviour.
However, Alex emphasised that owners should never ignore symptoms and should always rule out medical problems first. If faking is confirmed, it usually indicates a need for more attention, routine, or stimulation.
The advice resonated online, with pet owners sharing similar experiences. One user commented on how positive reinforcement works, while another described their cat having what seemed like panic attacks.
