Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the European Union on Wednesday, calling on the bloc to demonstrate its commitment to Ukraine's accession process by opening new negotiation clusters. Speaking after Ireland assumed the EU presidency, Zelenskyy stressed that tangible progress is essential to sustain Ukrainian morale and trust in the EU.
Zelenskyy's Call for Action on Accession Clusters
“Steps like opening new clusters strengthen the motivation of our people, lift the spirit of Ukrainians and show that the EU keeps its promises. It is so important to keep promises and that is exactly how it should be,” Zelenskyy said, receiving warm applause from the audience.
Pressing for Stronger Measures Against Russia
Zelenskyy also highlighted areas where the EU could tighten its rules to increase pressure on Moscow, including further restrictions on EU companies that continue doing business with Russia. He urged the bloc to support every step that makes it harder for Russia to sustain its war effort.
Drone Deal and Broader EU Responsibilities
The Ukrainian leader expressed hope that under Ireland's presidency, the EU would make real progress on the drone deal proposed by Ukraine. He emphasized that amid numerous international and national challenges, the EU has an opportunity and responsibility to be a force for stability, productivity, and respect for human life.
“When we face many other challenges both in international affairs and at the national level across Europe, the EU has an opportunity and a responsibility to be a force that brings more stability, more productivity, and basic respect for human life, the kind of life everyone wants for themselves, their children, and their families,” Zelenskyy stated.
