Residents of a quiet cul-de-sac in Coventry have expressed fury after a garish bright green parcel locker was unexpectedly installed in the middle of their street, sparking concerns over safety and aesthetics.
Installation without warning
The enormous locker, which is battery-run and solar-powered, belongs to Yeep! – a specialist in delivery lockers. It appeared on Arne Road in Walsgrave on April 10, leaving locals baffled. The delivery point is situated half a mile from the nearest shop, raising questions about its necessity.
John and Suzanna Davies, who live just a few doors away, claim the locker has not been used even once since its installation. John, 77, said: 'Everybody is up in arms about it. It's on the lawn that residents themselves tend. All the gardens are kept prim and proper, and we take pride in the area.'
He explained that a small plot of land was sold by a developer, and a man from Kenilworth purchased it. Initially, residents were told a concrete base was being laid for a salt box – a welcomed idea. However, the 8ft (2.4m) 'eyesore' appeared instead. 'He's completely pulled the wool over our eyes,' John fumed.
Safety and visual concerns
Suzanna, 57, who works in admin and finance at a school, said: 'It's outrageous. We were on holiday, and when we got back it was there, plonked in the middle. We all care for where we live. There are pretty flowers, and we all help with the mowing, which will be harder now.' She also noted that resident-only parking increases traffic risk to children.
Lynda Congrave, 79, who has lived on the street for 40 years, believes the locker poses a serious risk to local children. 'I can't believe it's right outside my living room window. It's disgusting. It blocks my view, and I'm concerned about young children playing here. If cars speed down to drop parcels, there could be an accident.'
Council investigation
Coventry City Council has confirmed the structure is under investigation to determine if it was erected without proper authorisation. A spokesman said: 'Nothing further to say at this stage. The matter is under investigation, and officers have contacted the landowner and locker company.'
Yeep! were approached for comment but did not respond. Residents await a resolution, hoping the locker will be moved to a more suitable location.
