A motorist in Falmouth, Cornwall, was fined £250 for littering after throwing a £50 parking ticket to the ground in frustration. The incident, captured on a Civil Enforcement Officer's body-worn camera, shows the driver unloading her car in a no-loading zone before discarding the fine and verbally abusing the officer. She later received a fixed penalty notice for littering, which could be reduced to £150 if paid early.
Two other individuals were also fined for littering after being caught on CCTV. One man threw an egg custard carton from his vehicle in the St Austell area, while a woman dropped a drinks bottle as she climbed into a car in Falmouth. Both admitted the offences and paid £150 within 14 days.
Councillor Thalia Marrington, Portfolio Holder for Community Safety and Public Health at Cornwall Council, stated: 'Cornwall is beautiful, and we want to keep it that way. There is no excuse for dropping litter and when we have evidence of these offences, we will always try to trace those responsible.' She urged residents to report such incidents using doorbell or home security camera footage.
A recent study found that a quarter of Brits admit to littering, with half discarding plastic items after a single use. The research also revealed that only a quarter recognise the impact on marine life, despite 54% acknowledging single-use plastics as most harmful. Calum Duncan of the Marine Conservation Society noted that nine out of ten beach litter items are plastic, posing a serious threat to ocean ecosystems.
