Relatives of those killed in the 1994 RAF Chinook disaster have launched a scathing attack on government ministers, accusing them of treating bereaved families with "contempt" and a "breach of trust." The families have now made a direct appeal to the Prime Minister to step in and intervene, claiming the Ministry of Defence has callously dismissed their three-decade-long fight for answers about the tragic crash.
MoD Statement Sparks Fury Among Bereaved Families
Over the weekend, the Ministry of Defence issued an official statement asserting that "there has not been evidence presented which would shed significant new light on the cause" of the Chinook crash. This declaration has been met with outrage from the victims' families, who describe it as a "slap in the face" and a profound betrayal of trust.
The statement comes just weeks after a landmark meeting in December—the first time in 31 years that Defence Ministers had agreed to meet with the families. During that meeting, relatives say they received assurances that any new evidence would be properly and thoroughly reviewed by authorities.
Chinook Justice Campaign Demands Prime Ministerial Intervention
In a powerful and emotional letter addressed directly to the Prime Minister, the Chinook Justice Campaign articulated the "immense pain" caused by the MoD's latest statement. The letter emphasised that families have already endured over three decades without satisfactory answers or closure regarding the circumstances of the crash.
The correspondence stated: "We also want to express our utter disbelief that only days after pleading with the victims minister to represent us—and explaining in clear terms the sense of being repeatedly gaslit by the Ministry of Defence—we find ourselves once again subjected to the very same treatment."
Families Clarify Campaign Objectives Amid Misrepresentation Claims
Family representatives stress that ministers are "fully aware" their campaign is not primarily about establishing the technical cause of the crash. Instead, they seek answers about the broader circumstances and decisions that led to the tragedy, including compelling evidence suggesting the aircraft may not have been airworthy at the time of the incident.
Jenni Balmer-Hornby, whose father Anthony perished in the disaster, expressed her profound disappointment: "To issue that statement within 48 hours of our meeting with the victims minister is not just disappointing, it is unfair, unacceptable and unfathomable."
Susan Phoenix, who lost her husband Ian in the crash, added: "To continue to misrepresent our position in this way feels deliberate and deeply disrespectful."
Call for Direct Prime Ministerial Involvement and Judicial Review
The families are now demanding that the Prime Minister intervene personally to ensure their evidence receives proper consideration and that "meaningful dialogue" finally takes place between government officials and bereaved relatives. They seek transparency and accountability after years of what they describe as bureaucratic obstruction and dismissive attitudes.
An RAF spokesman confirmed: "The Chinook Justice Campaign have submitted a formal claim to the MoD for a judicial review of our decision to reject the demand for a judge-led inquiry into the circumstances of the crash. We are unable to comment further at this time."
