Colombian Military Transport Plane Crashes in Remote Amazon Region
A military transport aircraft, identified as a Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules, has crashed in Colombia's southern Amazon region following takeoff on Monday. The country's defence ministry has confirmed the accident, which occurred near the Peruvian border.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The aircraft departed from Puerto Leguizamo, a remote location deep within the Amazon rainforest. According to Defence Minister Pedro Sanchez, the plane was transporting troops from the Colombian armed forces when it went down. Local media outlet BluRadio, citing authorities, reported that 110 soldiers were on board the aircraft at the time of the crash.
The crash site was located just three kilometres (approximately two miles) from an urban centre, raising concerns about potential ground casualties. However, Minister Sanchez emphasized that "the exact number of victims and the causes of the crash have not yet been determined." Rescue and investigation teams have been dispatched to the remote area.
Similar Recent Incident Involving Hercules Aircraft
This tragedy follows another recent crash involving a Hercules C-130 aircraft. At the end of February, a Bolivian Air Force Hercules C-130 crashed in the populous city of Alto. That incident resulted in more than 20 fatalities and 30 injuries.
The Bolivian crash caused banknotes from the plane's cargo to scatter throughout the city, leading to clashes between residents and security forces. The aircraft narrowly missed a residential block, potentially preventing even greater casualties.

US defence contractor Lockheed Martin, manufacturer of the C-130 Hercules aircraft, did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the Colombian crash. The C-130 Hercules has been a workhorse military transport aircraft for decades, used by numerous armed forces worldwide for various missions including troop transport, medical evacuation, and cargo delivery.
